WHITE, FLEMING BATES-In Memory of Fleming Bates White,
Born in 1802, Died June 26, 1882."
Fleming Bates White and Catharine Alexander White were the grandparents of my mother, Duanna White Grimwood (Dec. 29, 1882 - Oct. 9, 1977). My mother remembered being told that her grandfather, Fleming Bates White, migrated from Northumberland County, Virginia, with Samuel "Uncle Sammy" Smither whom she believed was actually an older half-brother. Smither owned land on Pulaski Pike (Madison County, Ala.) between Wade Mountain and King Mountain. As a boy, knew Wade Mountain as Smither Mountain.
As a boy, I remember seeing the home of "Uncle Sammy," which was located just east of the intersection of Kelly Cemetery Road with Pulaski Pike. The home was located near a large limestone sink which, according to Mother, at one time had a good spring at its bottom. With the expansion of Huntsville, new homes have been built on the site of the old homestead.

An old cemetery just west of the home site contained the graves of Fleming Bates White and Catharine Alexander White. Others, perhaps Samuel Smither and his wife, Elizabeth, were buried there, but I am not sure.
